Hi, I’m Yassine Meskhout. There sure are a whole lot of you now!
As you most likely already know, I was poached by Jesse Singal to work in the content farming complex of Singal-Minded. My first piece was just recently published, titled Eleven Magic Words. All my contributions there will be for paid subscribers only—so if you’re poor then too bad.
But! During my tenure at the salt mines, I invite you all to trawl through my archives to find things to get mad at me about. I might also post new pieces here as well, in case I write anything that makes Jesse concerned about legal liability.
Below is a helpful guide to get you started.
Death of a Client - Probably my rawest essay. I wrote it all out in a single sitting when I learned about the death of one of my clients, months after the fact.
Pretrial Release's Crystal Ball - The underappreciated and bizarre “Minority Report” reality of how people’s bail is set by judges.
Riots Work - I defend burning down the Minneapolis 3rd Precinct police building, but also acknowledge the severe deleterious impact the rest of the destruction would have on communities economically already on the brink.
Driver License Suspensions are Modern Debtor's Prisons - A deeply unsexy issue which unfortunately has severe negative consequences for millions of people across the country.
What Exactly is Rape Culture? - I highlight stories of the utterly miserable lives my sex offender clients live to question the narrative that sexual assault is somehow given a pass by our society.
Culture & Politics
Book Review: Unmasked - Andy Ngo - I review Andy Ngo’s book as a peculiarly involved and completely biased spectator. Katie Herzog then interviewed me on this topic for Blocked & Reported Episode 67.
Selling Out is so Passé - How the concept of “selling out” basically disappeared, especially as it relates to the indie music scene.
Slavery In Video Games - The awkward dance video games try to play when simulating the historical reality of slavery.
A Scandalous Confession - Me confessing to gaming the disability accommodation system in college solely for the purpose of gaining a competitive advantage over my classmates.
Can The GOP Ever Truly Divorce Away From Its QAnon Wing? - Part one of a three-part series where I try to grapple with how literally insane the GOP was becoming.
Kraken Down! - I have written extensively about the alleged 2020 election fraud, from the standpoint of debunking Trump’s claims. This post is only the last in a long lineage of entries.
Sex & Dating
Cuckoldry as Status Jockeying - Whether men who say they are into cuckoldry are deluding themselves. CW: dripping with a potential toxic amount of machismo.
Pick Up Artistry as a Cargo Cult - I talk about my own experience with PUA methods and explain how the methods only work when you don’t know why they work.
Do Trans People Exist? - UH-OH. Uh-oh.
The Bailey Podcast
I’d be remiss to omit that I created and host The Bailey podcast, the semi-official podcast of The Motte, with the semi-regular release schedule. The last episode was on ethnic diversity in casting, and it compounded the meta commentary by its own casting choices. Ep 16 covers the concept of supernormal stimuli, and is appropriately titled The Banality of Catgirls. Ep 26 discusses the most disturbing piece of writing I have ever read, a 200-page suicide note by a paraplegic. You can subscribe and find the rest of the episodes wherever you get your podcasts.
You can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org to either complain or confess all your crimes to me. Hope you stick around 😘
Been listening to The Bailey ever since I found you via Katie Herzog's interview a while back. Love what you're doing!
